Is it possible to not bring up the UI when hitting the up arrow, and just have it insert the last command like the default shell behavior? I still want to keep the UI for Ctrl+R.

You can make the UI smaller by setting something like inline_height = 20, if that’s the issue
Sorry I may have misunderstood - if you’d like to keep atuin behaviour but have it act like the default shell history, that’s not possible at present
