Force search window like bare terminal, disable tmux pop-out window?

I like this style of in-terminal search interface, but want to use it in tmux. This style used to be the norm, and I don’t see how to disable the new one.

The tmux pop over window that I want to entirely disable—unclear if this is the alternate-window that can be disabled in tmux, but setting it off and reloading tmux did not disable it.
