Is Atuin Desktop orphaned?

Not a lot of responses from devs. No releases. Help link in app points at Atuin CLI, not desktop.

Pretty much, yes. I posted something on Discord a couple of weeks ago that summarises it reasonably well, but in short

We built Desktop to fill the gap between tasks you could 100% automate (eg in CI) and tasks that could only be partially automated and required a human in the loop. When I started, there were a lot of problems that fit into that space. Over the past year (esp the last 6mo or so), agents have become a better solution to many things here.

There are still cases where Desktop’s approach would make sense, but fewer than ever. I only see that trend continuing.

One of the early design goals was around making it easy to pull process out of your shell history, codify it, and share it. This is still something I believe in! I just don’t think the shape for that is an executable runbook

It still works as is, but is unlikely to get support or maintenance from the team going forwards.

I miss working on the project though, and if we figure out a way for it to be worth the investment I’d be open to considering resuming it once more.

Thanks, Ellie. I’d thought about agents, but that ties me to some evolving LLM front end being able to read whatever state I have locally (since I like to commit that state with the code  )

Perhaps I’ll find some time to whack it…

Sad, but understandable.
